1. A Great Communicator
As a seller or buyer, it can be stressful dealing with an agent who’s not a great communicator.
Poor communication from agents is one of the biggest frustrations for buyers and sellers. Communication is really the key here, and that goes for listening too. Clients want someone who is able to hear their desires and put them into practice. Clients are going through an exciting, yet stressful time in their life, and one way to make them happy is to have an agent that maintains excellent communication. You and your agent should try be on the same page from the very start. A good agent will present their opinions and recommendations, but will leave the major decisions up to you.
More and more studies show that when it comes to real estate, people want someone they can trust, someone who knows the neighborhood they want to move into, and can lead them through the entire experience.
Take time to find a human you respect and trust. Look for an agent who is patient, honest and trustworthy – traits you’d look for in a lifelong friend! When it comes to choosing an agent, clients want a sense that an agent is trustworthy and responsive to their needs. A Consumer Housing Trends Study found that millennials prefer a more hands-on approach to their real estate experience: “While older generations rely on real estate agents for information and expertise, Millennials expect real estate agents to become trusted advisers and strategic partners.”
Transparency is also key. This goes hand in hand with trustworthiness & great communication. While a licensed real estate professional should know that their primary duty is to their client, it is also essential to maintain transparency toward other parties in a transaction. A win-win transaction can only take place when material information is communicated and understood by all parties involved. An agent that has the ability to put you at ease during one of the biggest financial decisions of your life, is someone you want to keep around!
4. Both Client-Motivated and Self-Motivated
For many agents, they are their own boss. Even if they work under a broker, they’re not actually an employee – they’re likely to be an independent contractor. For this reason, you need to find an agent that is self-motivated. No one is going to breath down their neck and make them work! It’s entirely up to them. Not only do you want to find someone who is self-motivated, you also want someone who is client motivated. If the customer gets a good deal, the agent gets a good deal. Which is why it’s so important to choose an agent who puts their vendors first. A good agent will always have their clients needs as their top priority. It’s important for the agent to make sure that the client is feeling supported and happy.
We have mentioned this before in our blog on “picking the best agent” but being tech-savvy is a very important trait to look for in 2020 and beyond. Technology plays a huge role in real estate buying and selling. If you’re buying or selling a home, you’ll probably list it or look for it somewhere online. Home listings might include photos of the home, information on its background, etc. Though it seems easy to post a few photos online and write a description, online marketing isn’t that easy. There’s a lot of skill and expertise that goes into the online real estate market. Your agent should have fluent, knowledge of sites like Trulia and Zillow, as well as their own ability to market your home via social media. He or she should know how to take high-quality photos and present your home in a way that attracts potential buyers. Check out the agent online. What are they posting on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and more? Are they using their social media platforms to share relevant, helpful information, or are they just posting memes and non-sense? The best agents like to educate the consumer so they can feel confident when buying or selling their home.
6. Desire to help people
Agents can make a lot of money in real estate, but this is also an intense, stressful gig. If an agent is in it for the money and only the money, it will be very obvious to the client.

No matter how busy agents are, the good ones always make time for their clients. Agents should be reachable and attentive, returning your calls and emails in a timely way.
It is important that agents stay in close contact with their client. What seems like insignificant information to an agent can be really important to the client who is new to real estate.
